Not Gon’ Cry

“Baby, if you don’t hurry your black, nappy-headed ass down them steps, I’m gonna leave you up in this muthafucka,” my mother yelled at me from downstairs.

One would have thought that she had been calling my name a hundred times, but she hadn’t. That was my first notice that she was ready to head out the door for church. A woman who filled her Sunday air with that much cussing needed Jesus all right.

“Coming, Ma.” I ran down the steps while slipping my black pumps on.

“What did I tell you about wearing them hooker shoes to church? You go to church to hear the Word of the Lord, not to walk the runway like you some Victoria’s Secret model. And put on a goddamn sweater with that slinky-ass dress. Your arms hanging all out and shit.”

“But, Ma, there ain’t nothing wrong with th—”

“Are you about to talk back?” She raised her hand to strike me.

“No, ma’am.” I sighed as my mother snatched her keys off the key hook and stormed out the door.

“I’ll be waiting for you in the car. Hurry the fuck on.”

Back in the day, I would have started to cry. In fact, I would have cried all the way to church, then Penny—that’s my mother’s name—would have taken a tissue from her purse and wiped away my tears as hard as she could. That shit hurt like hell, too. She would rub so hard with that tissue that she’d leave red marks underneath my eyes. So I learned early on to suck it up and not to cry.
